Andreas Schmittner is a Professor at Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), Department of Oceanography. His research focuses on climate change, ocean biogeochemical cycles, paleoclimatology, and ocean circulation dynamics. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Bern (1999) and a Diploma in Physics from the University of Bremen (1996).
His work integrates numerical modeling and paleoceanographic data to understand past and future climate changes. Key projects include investigating glacial ocean circulation, carbon cycle dynamics during deglaciations, and the role of iron fertilization. He leads the UVic Earth System Climate Model (ESCM) group, developing tools for simulating climate-carbon interactions.
Notable contributions include the 2020 Kirk Bryan Award for research on Pacific-Atlantic climate phasing. Schmittner advises graduate students and teaches courses like 'Introduction to Climate Modeling' and 'Climate Science.' His research is supported by grants from NSF and international collaborations.
