Dr Philip Goodwin is an Associate Professor in Earth System Dynamics at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Ocean and Earth Science department. His research spans climate-carbon system interactions, focusing on:
- Earth's coupled physical climate and biogeochemical systems
- The Anthropocene, including surface warming, sea level rise, and ocean acidification
- Climate sensitivity and feedback mechanisms
- Atmosphere-land-ocean carbon fluxes
His recent work involves 1.5°C warming pathways, Arctic amplification, methane policy, and ice sheet feedbacks. His publications demonstrate expertise in climate modeling, risk assessment, and interdisciplinary climate solutions. He has secured NERC research funding and previously held fellowships at Cambridge and Southampton. Currently, he teaches modules on Climate Change, Ocean Data Analysis, and Palaeoclimate, while leading Oceanography programs.
Notably, he developed a fast climate model to evaluate millions of emissions scenarios for COP21 targets, collaborating with international institutions like the UK Environment Agency and Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure. His method enables probabilistic projections constrained by historical data, advancing policy-driven climate decision-making.
Scientific Awards:
- NERC Postdoctoral Research Fellow
- Herchel Smith Postdoctoral Fellow
As Programme Lead in Oceanography, he mentors PhD studentships and contributes to climate policy frameworks through computational models that integrate geological and observational constraints.
