Professor Gavin Foster, a faculty member at the University of Southampton, is a leading expert in Isotope Geochemistry within the Department of Ocean and Earth Science. His research focuses on using isotopic and geochemical techniques to understand anthropogenic climate change impacts on the Earth System, particularly through boron isotopes in marine organisms like foraminifera and corals. He actively supervises PhD students and collaborates with institutions such as the European Union, Royal Society, and Weizmann Institute of Science.
- Research Interests: Climate change impact on oceanic carbonate systems, biomineralization mechanisms, and tracing anthropogenic air pollution sources.
- Current Projects: Microns2Reefs, C-FORCE, CoralChem, and TONIC, supported by EU, Royal Society, and NERC funding.
- Collaborations: Works with researchers like Professor Joerg Wiedenmann, Doctor Cecilia D'angelo, and Professor Damon Teagle.
His lab (The Foster Lab) specializes in cutting-edge isotopic analysis, contributing to understanding ocean acidification, carbon cycle dynamics, and climate sensitivity. Publications span journals like Nature Communications, Geochemical Perspectives Letters, and Paleoceanography, with recent work addressing past global temperatures, Polar Amplification, and shipping emissions in Southampton. He is accepting PhD applicants and maintains active research ties with interdisciplinary groups including the Institute for Life Sciences and Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.
