Professor Tom Bibby is a Professor of Biological Oceanography at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the School of Ocean and Earth Science. He leads research on photosynthetic microbes' roles in global biogeochemical cycles and their potential for sustainable products. His work addresses climate impacts, microbial evolution under ocean change, and satellite-based physiological detection. Bibby directs postgraduate programs in Ocean and Earth Science and collaborates with institutes like the Institute for Life Sciences and Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.
Research Interests:
- Global biogeochemical cycles driven by marine microbes
- Development of sustainable products using photosynthetic organisms
- Climate change impacts on marine microbial communities
- Integration of 'omics data with Earth System models
Key Projects:
- New Perspectives On Ocean Photosynthesis (N-POP)
- Iron and Manganese Impacts on Southern Ocean Ecosystems
- Rewiring Photosynthesis with Synthetic Biology
Publications: Recent work focuses on phytoplankton responses to environmental stressors, cyanobacterial metabolism, and Arctic microbial shifts due to climate change. His articles explore biogeochemical mechanisms, sustainable biotechnology, and ecosystem feedback loops.
Labs/Teams: Active in interdisciplinary teams at the University of Southampton, collaborating on projects funded by BBSRC, NERC, and the Royal Society.
