Professor Philip Davies holds the position of Professor of Physical Chemistry at Cardiff University's School of Chemistry. He is a leading expert in surface science, catalysis, and photocatalysis, with a focus on understanding surface processes influencing chemical reactions. His research integrates advanced characterization techniques like Photoinduced Force Microscopy (PiFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). He has led significant projects, including coordinating the EU-funded PCATDES consortium (2012–2016) for photocatalytic water purification and founding the EPSRC National Research Facility in Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HarwellXPS). Current roles include co-director of HarwellXPS and membership in the Cardiff Catalysis Institute.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry from University College Cardiff (1989)
- Roles:
- Personal Chair in Physical Chemistry (2014)
- Former Director of HarwellXPS (2017–2023)
- Collaborations: Cross-disciplinary work with Pharmacy, Engineering, Bioscience, Archaeology, and Earth Sciences departments.
Research interests span heterogeneous catalysis, surface reactivity, nanoscale characterization, and environmental applications like water purification and CO₂ reduction. His work emphasizes photocatalytic hydrogen generation, material surface engineering, and novel spectroscopic techniques. Over 150 peer-reviewed articles highlight contributions to surface science and catalysis.
Professor Davies supervises PhD students in surface chemistry, catalysis, and nanomaterials. He teaches advanced courses in physical chemistry and spectroscopy, including CH5101, CH5201, and CHT330.
