Ben Spencer is a Senior Technical Specialist and Faculty Lead in Surface Analysis at The University of Manchester's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He manages cutting-edge facilities including X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), leading a 12-member team. His research focuses on advanced materials characterization, particularly Hard X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES) applications for batteries, actinides, and 2D materials. He holds a PhD in Pump-probe Spectroscopy of Photovoltaic Materials from The University of Manchester (2011).
Key roles include Secretary of the Materials and Characterisation Group at The Institute of Physics, Co-Director of the EPSRC National XPS Service, and Committee Member of UKSAF. His expertise spans surface analysis techniques and their application to sustainable materials, contributing to UN SDGs related to affordable energy and responsible consumption.
Research interests emphasize surface degradation mechanisms in energy materials, nanomaterials synthesis, and advanced analytical methodologies. His work bridges academic research and industry collaboration through services for external academics and SMEs via the Henry Royce Institute and EPSRC National XPS Service.
