Philip Buckley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at McGill University, previously serving as Chair of the department. His research focuses on Phenomenology, particularly the works of Husserl and Heidegger, exploring themes such as ethical responsibility, subjectivity, and communal identity. He holds degrees from the University of Toronto (BA, MA) and the University of Louvain (PhL, PhD).
Prof. Buckley’s major work, Husserl, Heidegger and the Crisis of Philosophical Responsibility (1992), unifies Husserl’s philosophical trajectory and challenges fragmented interpretations. He coordinates interdisciplinary research teams, including a FQRSC-funded project on 'Phenomenology and Ethics' with Université de Montréal. His recent work extends phenomenological insights to political and cultural contexts, such as Indonesia’s higher education reforms and Quebec’s identity challenges.
His publications analyze Husserl’s communal ethics, Heidegger’s critique of technology, and the intersection of phenomenology with history and politics. Beyond academia, he contributes to curriculum design in Indonesia and plays ice hockey with the Philosophy Department’s intramural team.
