Philip Alston is the John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law at New York University and a Senior Fellow (Melbourne Law Masters) at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. He serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, a role focused on investigating and reporting on systemic human rights issues linked to poverty globally. Previously, he chaired the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1991–98), served as UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions (2004–2010), and was a member of the UN Security Council’s Commission of Inquiry on the Central African Republic (2014). His work spans legal advisory roles, including with UNICEF during the drafting of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
His research emphasizes intersections between poverty, human rights law, and systemic accountability. Alston’s career is marked by contributions to international legal frameworks and their practical implementation. He has held prominent positions across academia, UN bodies, and non-governmental organizations, reflecting his dual commitment to scholarly rigor and actionable human rights advocacy.
