Phil Trella is the Associate Vice Provost and Director of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of Virginia, where he has led institutional efforts in graduate education and postdoctoral training since 2011. His work focuses on student-centered education, interdisciplinary initiatives, and career development programs like PhD Plus.

- B.A. from State University of New York at Buffalo
- M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from University of Virginia
Phil’s academic research interests include the archaeology of the ancient Near East, specifically southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, studying ancient food production systems, long-term environmental change, and the disintegration of complex societies. He also has field research experience in Europe, northern Finland, and North America.
He has spearheaded programs such as the Presidential Fellowships in Data Science, Collaborative Neuroscience, and initiatives with the Environmental Resilience Institute, funded by grants from the Jefferson Trust, NSF, and the Mellon Foundation. Phil serves as principal investigator on the NSF/Mellon-funded PhD Career Pathways project and leads UVA’s participation in the Coalition for Next Generation Life Science.
