Evan A. Scott is the Thomas A. Saunders III Family Jefferson Scholars Foundation Distinguished University Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia, with dual appointments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Medicine. He leads the Institute for Nanoscale Scientific and Technological Advanced Research (nanoSTAR) at UVA’s Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology. His work focuses on nanotechnology-driven solutions for cancer, glaucoma, heart disease, and transplant rejection, with a strong emphasis on biomaterials, immunotherapy, and tissue engineering.
Education: B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University (2002); Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis (2009). Postdoctoral training at EPFL in Switzerland under Professors Jeffrey Hubbell and Melody Swartz as a Whitaker International Scholar.
Research Interests: Advanced Immunotherapies, Nanotechnology, Biomaterials Science, Tissue Engineering. His lab develops nanocarrier systems for targeted drug delivery, immunomodulation, and regenerative medicine. Notable projects include nanoparticle-based strategies to combat Chagas disease, glaucoma treatment via Schlemm’s canal targeting, and islet transplantation tolerance induction.
Scientific Awards: AIMBE Fellow (2022), Halo 40 Under 40 (2019), Biomaterials Science Emerging Investigator (2019), and multiple NIH and NSF grants. His work has been featured in major media for breakthroughs in organ transplant rejection prevention and nanoparticle drug delivery.
Grants & Collaborations: Extensive NIH funding, including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2015). Leads interdisciplinary teams at UVA Cancer Center and collaborates globally on translational nanomedicine projects. Advises graduate students in biomaterials and immunology.
Labs & Teams: Head of the Scott Research Group and Director of nanoSTAR. Collaborates with UVA’s Departments of Medicine, Surgery, and Pharmacology, as well as international institutions like EPFL and Northwestern University.
