Garrick Louis is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, holding dual appointments in the Department of Engineering and Society and the Department of Systems & Information Engineering. He focuses on social equity in engineering and sustainability, particularly addressing systemic inequities in access to infrastructure services and STEM education.
Education: BSc in Chemical Engineering (Howard University, 1983), MSc in Chemical Engineering (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1985), PhD in Engineering and Public Policy (Carnegie Mellon University, 1996), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon’s Green Design Institute (1996–1997).
Research emphasizes equitable sustainability, marginalized communities’ infrastructure access, and capacity-building strategies. Recent work explores climate adaptation in coastal regions like Norfolk, Virginia, and innovative solutions like hydroponic farming for food security.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to water sanitation, policy analysis, and educational equity. Awards include the NSF’s Presidential Early Career Award and the Jefferson Science Fellowship (2015), where he advised the U.S. Department of State on global food security.
