Michael L. King is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA). He holds a B.S. from Virginia Tech, an M.S. from UVA, and a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. With 32 years of industrial experience at Merck & Co., Inc., he retired as Senior Vice President and Advisor to the Chairman, President, and CEO. At UVA since 2007, he initially served as the Brenton S. Halsey Distinguished Visiting Professor and was appointed to his current role in 2013.
His expertise spans chemistry, manufacturing, and control (CMC) for biopharmaceuticals, with active involvement in global health initiatives. He serves as a subject matter expert for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and contributes to COVAX’s efforts for equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines. He currently sits on CEPI’s Portfolio Strategy Management Board and Scientific Advisory Committee, the board of Engineering Conferences International, and Contraline, a biotech startup.
King teaches CHE 4456/5456, focusing on bioproduct and bioprocess engineering challenges in vaccine and biologic commercialization. He also helped develop UVA’s Engineering Business Minor program. Beyond academia, he is an avid global travel photographer, having visited all seven continents and 62 countries.
