Elgin Cleckley is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Design at the University of Virginia (UVA), with appointments in the School of Education and Human Development and the School of Nursing. He directs the Design Justice initiative at UVA’s Equity Center, focusing on inclusive spaces through empathic design methodologies. Cleckley earned a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from UVA and a master’s from Princeton University. His work bridges identity, culture, history, and memory, emphasizing tools for belonging in public spaces. He leads the NOMA Project Pipeline mentorship program and founded _mpathic design, an award-winning firm addressing equity in design. Awards include UVA’s top teaching honor and fellowships from MacDowell and the Mellon Foundation.
