James Groves is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia's School of Engineering & Applied Science, holding a primary appointment in the Department of Engineering & Society and a courtesy appointment in Materials Science and Engineering. He focuses on sustainable development, engineering ethics, design thinking, and online education innovation. Dr. Groves co-invented directed vapor deposition technology and co-founded Directed Vapor Technologies International, resulting in multiple U.S. and international patents. He pioneered the Engineers PRODUCED in Virginia initiative, which expanded access to engineering education for underserved communities.
