James F. Groves is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, holding primary appointment in the Department of Engineering & Society and a courtesy appointment in Materials Science and Engineering. He is a leader in sustainable energy education, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to address climate change impacts and ethical dimensions of engineering solutions. His roles include former Associate Dean for Online Innovation, where he pioneered initiatives like Engineers PRODUCED in Virginia, enhancing access to engineering education for underserved communities. Groves holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering (UVA, 1998) and a Mechatronics certificate from Cornell (2024).
His research focuses on sustainability, engineering ethics, and design thinking. Recent projects include GIS-based carbon footprint tracking for student housing and climate change impacts in the mid-Atlantic region. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Sustainable Energy Systems and Engineering Ethics, integrating values-based design to motivate students toward societal and environmental impact.
Dr. Groves has been recognized with awards including the Hartfield-Jefferson Scholars Teaching Prize (2015). He serves on the University of Virginia Conflict of Interest Committee, reviewing faculty activities for potential conflicts. His work bridges academia and industry, leveraging patents in vapor deposition technologies and advocating for equitable education models.
