Peter Thilenius is Professor of Business Administration, especially International Business, at Uppsala University’s Department of Business Administration, where he also serves as Head of Department and Director of the Observatory. Since joining Uppsala in 1988, he has progressed from doctoral student to senior lecturer, associate professor (2004, Mälardalen University) and, from 2011, full professor.

Research Interests
Professor Thilenius’s research centres on marketing and business relationships across diverse contexts, with particular emphasis on:
- International entrepreneurship and the internationalisation processes of firms
- Digital transformation and the role of information technology in business networks
- Consumer behaviour in cross-border e-commerce and trust-building mechanisms
- Network dynamics, discontinuity, and the impact of political and regulatory environments on business relationships
His work often adopts a network perspective to understand how firms, consumers, and non-business actors interact within complex international settings.
Publications & Scholarly Impact
Across more than two decades, Professor Thilenius has published extensively in leading journals such as Industrial Marketing Management, International Marketing Review, Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing, International Business Review, and Business Process Management Journal. Recurrent themes include digitalisation, global business processes, trust in online financial services, and the evolution of Swedish banks’ international operations. His recent output (2014-2021) demonstrates a clear pivot toward digital transformation, ERP-system extensions, and the nuanced role of psychic distance in consumer decision-making.
Doctoral Supervision & Teaching
Within several funded research projects, Professor Thilenius has supervised more than ten doctoral students to successful defence. His teaching spans the full breadth of marketing courses, research methodology, and the supervision of numerous bachelor and master theses. He also served as Director of Studies for the undergraduate programme and was responsible for IT issues earlier in his career.
