Peter Smith is a Professor of Music Theory at the University of Notre Dame in the Department of Music, College of Arts and Letters. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Theory from Yale University, where he received the Whiting Dissertation Fellowship, and master's and bachelor's degrees in viola performance from The Juilliard School.
His research focuses on 19th-century instrumental music, particularly Brahms and related composers, theories of musical form and expression, Schenkerian analysis, and sonata theory. Smith has directed dissertations and theses for nine students, including Matthew Ingwersen and Andrew Krizman.
Smith has received awards including the Whiting Fellowship, Graduate Fellowship at Yale, and grants like the Notre Dame-Durham University Seed Grant. He serves as editor-in-chief of Music Theory Spectrum and holds leadership roles in the American Brahms Society.
