David Damschroder is Professor of Music Theory at the University of Minnesota, specializing in tonal harmony and historical analytical methods. Educated at Eastman School of Music and Yale University, he joined the faculty in 1983. His research reconstructs historical approaches to harmonic analysis through composer-specific studies.
He teaches courses in chromatic harmony, Schenkerian analysis, and post-1850 chromaticism. His publications include six Cambridge University Press volumes analyzing harmony in major composers from Haydn to Schumann. His co-authored work 'Music Theory from Zarlino to Schenker' received a special citation from the Society for Music Theory.
Additional interests include fortepiano performance, Renaissance art, German literature, and yoga.
