David Byrne is an Assistant Professor in the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba since 2013. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory, post-1900 music, orchestration, and Schenkerian analysis. Beyond academia, he actively works as a conductor, clarinetist, and arranger.

Research Focus: Dr. Byrne specializes in harmony and tonality in late 19th- and early 20th-century music, exploring historical harmonic theories and their connections to modern transformational and neo-Riemannian frameworks. His work also extends to musical form analysis and regional studies of 20th-century compositions from the UK, Canada, and Nordic countries.
Performance Highlights: He has conducted ensembles such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble, while contributing arrangements performed across Canada. As a clarinetist, he currently plays in the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble.

Ongoing Projects: Dr. Byrne is conducting a manuscript-based study of form and tonal structure in Frederick Delius’s music and co-authored the second edition of Harmony Through Melody (2020), an undergraduate theory textbook.
