Stewart Smith serves as an MPS Instructor in the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba while concurrently working full-time at St. John's-Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, reflecting his part-time academic appointment. His educational foundation includes a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Music from Northwestern University.
Smith's professional focus centers on:
- Low brass instruction and performance techniques
- Jazz composition and arrangement for educational ensembles
- Music technology integration in teaching methodologies
- Innovations in distance learning for music education
He co-founded the ALIVE Project (Accessible Live Internet Video Education) with Allan Molnar, enabling real-time collaborative music education across North America, Europe, and Australia, with presentations at international conferences in Bergen, Stockholm, and Canberra. His compositions have been performed by university jazz programs, the Manitoba High School All-Star Big Band, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. As an active clinician and adjudicator, he supports music festivals and camps throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the northern United States.
