Graham G Hunt serves as Professor of Musicology and Music Theory in the Department of Music at The University of Texas at Arlington's College of Liberal Arts. He has held continuous faculty positions since 2002, currently serving as Associate Chair of the Music Department (2018-present) and Program Coordinator for the Theory/Composition Area (2005-present), while also directing the Department Curriculum Committee.
His educational foundation includes a PhD in Musicology from Duke University (2001) with dissertation "Ever New Formal Structures": The Evolution of the Dialogue-Scene in Wagner's Lohengrin", an MA in Musicology from Duke (1996), and a BA in Music & Computer Science from Amherst College (1994).
Hunt's research centers on formal structures in classical and romantic-era music, specializing in sonata forms, Schenkerian analysis, and 18th/19th-century opera. His groundbreaking work applies William Caplin's Formal-Function Analysis to resolve formal ambiguities in composers from Mozart to Bruckner, with particular expertise in Wagner studies, three-key expositions, and rondo forms. He has presented 5+ times at the Society for Music Theory national meetings and served as Past President of the Texas Society for Music Theory (2011-2014).
His 15 most recent publications demonstrate consistent innovation in formal analysis, evolving from structural examinations of Wagner's operas (2005-2009) to sophisticated applications of sonata theory in classical finales (2014-2025), with increasing focus on opera-sonata hybrids and rotational forms in contemporary scholarship.
