Peter Smith is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the BSc (Hons) International Tourism Management programme at the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism, University of West London. With over 12 years of experience in higher education, he plays a central role in curriculum development and teaching, integrating academic rigor with practical industry insights.
His research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the sociology of tourism, particularly volunteer tourism and its implications for international development. His work critically examines the motivations, ethics, and socio-political dynamics of Western travelers engaging in development projects abroad.
The publication Volunteer Tourism: The lifestyle politics of international development (2015, co-authored with Jim Butcher) represents a key contribution to this field, exploring how lifestyle choices intersect with development narratives. The work is grounded in qualitative research and critical theory, contributing to broader discussions in tourism ethics and global citizenship.
Peter brings substantial industry experience to his academic role, having served as the UK Customer Relations Manager for STA Travel, a leading student and youth travel company. He leveraged this background to enhance student learning and program relevance.
Peter has not been mentioned as receiving any scientific awards or leading grants. However, his leadership in course design and interdisciplinary research strengthens the academic profile of the tourism programme.
He is actively involved in teaching modules within the BSc (Hons) International Tourism Management curriculum, ensuring alignment between academic content and real-world industry practices.
