Peter Sköld is a Professor of History, Sami Culture and Society Development at Umeå University. He serves as an advisor to the Vice-Chancellor on Arctic and international issues, and holds the role of Master of Ceremony at the university. His research focuses on Arctic sustainable development, historical demography, indigenous health transitions, and Sami cultural preservation. He is a Docent (senior lecturer) with extensive international collaboration experience.
Research & Leadership: Director of the Centre for Arctic Research (Arcum) from 2012–2020 and director of the Centre for Sami Research for 12 years. Current roles include Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of the Arctic (UArctic), former President of the International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA), and Swedish delegate to the Arctic Council's SECEG Expert Group. He leads the Arctic Five collaboration between Nordic universities.
Key Projects: Includes studies on Sami health transitions, demographic impacts of colonization, and Arctic biofuel initiatives. Over 500 presentations at international conferences, with major contributions to the Arctic Human Development Report II.
Awards: Honorary Consul of Västerbotten to Latvia (2015), Climate Ambassador of Västerbotten (2016).
Publications: Over 60 peer-reviewed articles and books on Sami history, Arctic demography, and indigenous rights. Recent works address Arctic sustainability, pandemic impacts, and colonial health disparities.
