Professor Peter Schmidt holds a professorship in Medieval Art History at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. His academic journey includes studies in art history, medieval German philology, and modern German literature at universities in Bamberg and Berlin. He earned his doctorate from Technical University of Berlin in 1995 and completed his habilitation at Goethe University Frankfurt in 2008.
His research explores functional and media history of images in medieval Europe, with special focus on panel painting, book art, printmaking during media transformations between Middle Ages and early modern period, text-image systems, and portraiture. Current projects examine inscriptions on painted portraits and material presence of written artefacts.
Professor Schmidt has curated major exhibitions including 'Origins of European Printmaking' at National Gallery of Art Washington and Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg. He holds leadership positions in multiple academic associations including the Association of German Art Historians and serves on scientific advisory boards at Austrian and Bavarian Academies of Sciences.
