Professor Dr. Christoph Dartmann is a faculty member at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities, holding the Chair in Medieval History with a focus on the High and Late Middle Ages in the Mediterranean region. He serves as Prodekan for Studies and Teaching in the Faculty of Humanities since March 2021. His research emphasizes Mediterranean political, social, and cultural history; Italian medieval history; and medieval monasticism.
Education: Studied History, Catholic Theology, Latin, and Education in Münster and Bologna (1990–1998). PhD in Medieval and Modern History (1998). Held positions at Münster University's Excellence Cluster 'Religion and Politics' (2008–2015) and guest professorships at Rostock, Vechta, Trier, and Hamburg.
Research interests include medieval political communication, conflict cultures, Benedictine monasticism, and modern receptions of medieval history. Active in projects like the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' (UWA) and studies on merchants' manuals in late medieval Italy.
Labs/Teams: Associated with the University of Hamburg's Medieval History Department and UWA cluster. Supervises research activities through projects like 'Formatting Knowledge of a Wider World' (2019–2025).
