Professor Dr. Ulla Kypta is a faculty member in the Department of European Medieval History at the University of Hamburg, serving as spokesperson for the 'Creating Originals' initiative and a member of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ (UWA). Her research focuses on medieval manuscript cultures, urban legal systems, and premodern economic networks. Key projects include RFC07 (2021–2024) on manuscript multiplicity and the 2023 research project 'Merchants and Cooperation in Premodern Times'.
Her work bridges legal, economic, and cultural history, with notable contributions to Hanseatic League studies and urban governance. She has published widely on topics such as medieval merchant networks, conflict resolution mechanisms, and the production of original written artefacts. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates manuscript analysis with political and economic frameworks.
Recent activities include lectures on premodern governance models and workshops on authenticating written artifacts. She actively participates in academic discourse through conferences and editorial roles, contributing to journals like Manuscript Cultures and the Journal of Urban History.
