Jakob Wigand is a Doctoral Student in Modern History at the University of Hamburg (UHH) and a Research Associate within the Cluster of Excellence Understanding Written Artefacts (UWA) and the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). His work focuses on colonial provenance research of historical collections, particularly papyrus manuscripts in Hamburg's libraries. He contributes to projects like Colonized Manuscripts, examining the ethical and historical dimensions of colonial acquisitions.
His research addresses issues of postcolonial provenance, library ethics, and the decontextualization of cultural artifacts. Key publications include analyses of colonial acquisition histories and the provenance of Hamburg's papyrus collections. Wigand has presented his findings at academic lectures, discussing topics such as Carl Schmidt's role in artifact acquisition and the implications of colonial collecting practices.
He is affiliated with the Department of Modern History and the E Archiving Artefacts initiative, contributing to interdisciplinary efforts in cultural heritage preservation. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
