Prof. Dr. Elsa Clavé is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hamburg’s Asia-Africa Institute, specializing in the intellectual and cultural history of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. She leads the research project Affirming Rights over Land and Resources and co-supervises the DREAMSEA initiative to digitize endangered Southeast Asian manuscripts. Her work focuses on Malay manuscript cultures, colonial legacies, and the memory of violence.

Her research explores historical exchanges in the Malay World, emphasizing how societies conceptualize their past. She has conducted fieldwork in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and archival studies across Europe and Asia. Current projects include analyzing land rights in 19th-century Johor and Singapore and strengthening manuscript preservation networks in Southeast Asia.
Publications span topics from Sulu Sultanate authority to pre-colonial Philippine inscriptions, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to cultural and social history.
