Peter Sands is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), within the College of Letters & Science. He holds a JD from the University of Wisconsin, a PhD from Binghamton University, and additional degrees from SUNY Albany. His research explores intersections of intellectual property law with academic publishing, digital writing/art, and 19th-century American literature. He also focuses on online teaching strategies, utopianism/dystopianism, science fiction, and rhetoric within legal contexts.
Research interests include law and literature, digital media, and composition studies. Sands has published widely on topics like cyberstates, hybrid classrooms, and utopian themes in literature. His work bridges legal frameworks, technological innovation, and cultural narratives. He serves as Director of the UWM Honors College, emphasizing interdisciplinary scholarship and student engagement.
His articles analyze works by authors like Philip K. Dick, Octavia Butler, and Kurt Vonnegut, addressing themes of posthumanism, environmental politics, and satirical critique. Sands’ pedagogical contributions include pioneering hybrid learning models and integrating digital tools into humanities education.
