He held dual roles as Professor of Organic Chemistry and Research Professor, leading UWM's graduate research program in organic chemistry. His interdisciplinary research spanned oxidative stress, bioelectrochemistry, drug metabolism, and medicinal chemistry. Known for his innovative teaching style, he incorporated humor into lectures and maintained a tradition of annual Hawaiian-shirt-themed talks.
Research contributions included over 450 publications, with key areas in redox metal halides, aromatic substitutions, Bredt's Rule, conducting polymers, and electron transfer theory. He authored "Fundamental Chemistry of Life and Death" (1983) and continued publishing until age 99, including a 2020 paper on COVID drugs.
He received the Pittsburgh Chemists Club Award of Merit (1975), U.S. Presidential Research Award, AAAS Fellowship, and Fulbright Scholar distinction (1983). His editorial roles included Macromolecular Syntheses (1967–1970) and Review of Chemical Intermediates (1978–1987). Despite retirement, he maintained full-time research and teaching commitments.
