He has led the CNRS UMR 7574 laboratory on Inorganic Materials from 1978 to 2000.
- Education: Engineering degree (1960) and Doctorate (1966) from Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie (ENSCP), Paris, France. Postdoctoral Fellow at Oxford University (1967-1968).
Research Interests span Inorganic Chemistry, Sol-gel Science, Bio-inspired Materials, and Hybrid Materials, focusing on chemical processes at ambient temperatures (chimie douce), bioencapsulation, and oxide synthesis. His work bridges solid-state chemistry and materials engineering.
Publications include over 450 scientific papers with 16,380 citations (h-index 62), highlighting pioneering research in sol-gel processes, transition metal oxides, and biomedical applications of hybrid materials.
- Scientific Awards: Prix Yvan Peyches (1980), Gold Medal of the Society for National Industry (1989), Grande Médaille Michel Perret (1989), Médaille Lavoisier (2007), and the Golden Word of Creative Terminology (2012) for coining 'chimie douce.'
Academic Leadership includes Senior Membership at Institut Universitaire de France (1996-2001) and memberships in the French Academy of Sciences, International Academy of Ceramics, and Indian Academy of Sciences. He has supervised approximately 60 PhD students.
