Peter Rowe is the Raymond Garbe Professor of Architecture and Urban Design and Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). He served as Dean of the GSD from 1992 to 2004, previously leading the Urban Planning and Design Department and Urban Design Programs. His research spans urban design, conservation, housing, and sustainability, with global projects in China, South Korea, Spain, and beyond. He advises cities on urban planning and has directed interdisciplinary research initiatives, including the Rice Center and Southwest Center for Urban Research.
Rowe is a prolific author with 26 books, exploring topics like East Asian urban modernity, sustainable housing, and urban form. Notable works include Korean Modern: The Matter of Identity (2021) and A City in Blue and Green: The Singapore Story (2019). He has held leadership roles at institutions such as the London School of Economics’ Cities Programme and contributed to low-cost housing and green technology initiatives.
His academic contributions extend to pedagogical innovations, including establishing the Harvard Design Magazine and the Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design. Courses taught include Elements of Urban Design and Urban Design Contexts and Operations. Awards include the Harvard Distinguished Service Professor title, recognizing his transformative impact on urban education and practice.
