Peter M. Mourani

Peter M. Mourani, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics – Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and serves as an attending physician in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He holds significant leadership roles as the Senior Vice President and Chief Research Officer for Arkansas Children’s and President of the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute.

Dr. Mourani’s research interests center on pediatric lung disease and critical illness, focusing on mechanisms of acute lung injury in neonates and children, developmental lung and vascular disease in premature infants, and severe lower respiratory tract infections, including ventilator-associated pneumonia. His work leverages multi-omics approaches such as microbiome, transcriptomic, and proteomic analyses to identify biomarkers and understand host-microbiome interactions that influence vulnerability and resilience in critically ill children. He is a principal investigator for NIH-funded projects and a key leader in the NICHD-supported Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN), contributing to groundbreaking initiatives like the PRECISE trial in personalized medicine for pediatric sepsis.

His recent publications reflect a strong trend in advanced molecular diagnostics, critical care outcomes research, and translational studies in pediatric respiratory failure. Articles span high-impact journals and explore topics including metagenomic sequencing for infection detection, proteomic profiling of immune responses, and biomarker discovery in ARDS and cardiac arrest.

Dr. Mourani is board certified in General Pediatrics, Pediatric Pulmonology, and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics. He is affiliated with professional organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Thoracic Society, and the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators Network.

His clinical focus includes pediatric intensive care, management of critical illness and injury, acute and progressive lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, and severe lower respiratory infections. He is not accepting new patients without referral and practices primarily at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, AR.
