Peter Knapp is a Professor in Inclusive Health at the University of York, affiliated with both the Department of Health Sciences (for research and postgraduate supervision) and the Hull York Medical School (HYMS, for teaching). With over three decades of academic experience, he transitioned from the University of Leeds (1993-2011) to York (since 2011), maintaining active roles in research leadership, teaching, and external collaborations.
- Education: RGN (1986), BA in Psychology/Sociology (1st class, University of Leeds, 1990), PhD in Psychology (University of Leeds, 1994)
- Current roles: Chair of HYMS Case Management Group (2020-present), member of Fitness to Practice committees (2013-19), and HRA National Research & Ethics Advisors' Panel (since 2016)
Research Interests focus on Inclusive Health, ensuring equitable healthcare access for marginalized groups. His work emphasizes health literacy, patient information design, and participatory methods. He has pioneered multimedia tools to improve clinical trial recruitment for children and families, while addressing barriers for people with learning disabilities and minority ethnic groups. Recent projects include:
- CUPID: Cancer prevention for people with intellectual disabilities (COST Action EU)
- MenSH: Sexual health interventions for men with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (NIHR funded)
- Lifeguard: Community pharmacy response service for domestic abuse/suicidal ideation (NIHR funded)
- RESTORE-II: Rehabilitation strategies for cancer survivors (Health Research Board funded)
- COUNTED: Communicating treatment uncertainty in dementia care (NIHR funded)
Scientific Awards include:
- 2015: Vice-Chancellor's award for Excellence in Teaching (University of York)
- 2019: Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)
His teaching spans Evidence-Based Decision Making across all four years of the MBBS medical degree at HYMS. He has supervised 16 completed doctoral students and currently mentors two (Rebecca Haythorne, Prenika Anand). His external activities include membership in the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit committee (since 2021) and leadership roles in clinical trial steering committees.
