Professor Jane Nixon is a leading academic in wound care and clinical trials research at the University of Leeds, School of Medicine. She holds a Promotional Chair in Tissue Viability and Clinical Trials Research (since 2009) and has been an NIHR Senior Investigator since 2016. Her work focuses on pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and clinical trial methodologies. Key roles include Director of the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences and Past President of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel.
Education: PhD, MA, BSc (Hons) in Nursing (RGN). Her research portfolio includes large-scale trials such as the NIHR PURPOSE Programme (enrolling 6,735 patients) and the HTA PRESSURE 2 trial (2,030 patients). Awards include an MBE (2017) for health research contributions.
Research interests span clinical trial design, pressure ulcer prevention, and healthcare economics. She leads international collaborations and has pioneered studies on wound infection diagnostics (e.g., CODIFI and CODIFI2 trials). Her work emphasizes patient-centered outcomes and guideline development, including the Pressure Ulcer Risk Primary or Secondary Evaluation Tool (PURPOSE-T).
Notable projects include the MIDFUT trial (multi-stage treatment for diabetic foot ulcers) and the HEALS cohort study on wound healing. She has advised on over 10 clinical trials and contributes to policy through roles like Chair of the Wounds Research Network. Current postgraduate researchers include Clare Greenwood and Lucy Hall.
