Professor Katzenstein's educational background includes degrees from Stanford University (BA) and Harvard University (PhD). His career has been marked by sustained excellence in both research and teaching, earning him Cornell's College of Arts and Science Stephen and Margery Russell Distinguished Teaching Award in 1993 and designation as a Stephen H. His research interests span a wide range of topics including power dynamics in world politics, the politics of regions and civilizations, American foreign policy, German and European politics, and the role of culture in international relations. Katzenstein is particularly known for his work on uncertainty in world politics, protean power, and civilizational identities. His approach often combines historical analysis with theoretical innovation, challenging conventional paradigms in international relations.
His recent publications, including Uncertainty and Its Discontents: Worldviews in World Politics (2022) and Downfall: The End of the American Order (2022), continue his longstanding examination of power, uncertainty, and civilizational dynamics in global politics. These works build on his decades of scholarship that has consistently pushed the boundaries of how we understand international relations through cultural and historical lenses.
Among his numerous honors, Katzenstein was awarded the prestigious Johan Skytte Prize in 2020, often considered the Nobel equivalent in political science. He has also received the Susan Strange Award (2011), been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science (1987), the American Philosophical Society (2009), and the British Academy (2015), and holds six honorary degrees from institutions worldwide.
