Peter Höyng is Professor and Chair of German Studies at Emory University's College of Arts and Sciences. His research explores German-language cultural production through historical contexts, specializing in German-Jewish relations, anti-Black racism narratives, Beethoven's cultural impact, and Viennese intellectual history.
Höyng's scholarship examines theater history, music-literature intersections, and colonial representations in German culture. His book projects include studies on Beethoven in censorship contexts and critical editions of early 20th-century novels addressing racism. Recent articles analyze Beethoven's conversation notebooks, postcolonial readings of Faust, and Austrian Jewish cultural history.
Educational background includes a PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Awards include Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship in Vienna (2013) and University of Tennessee's Jefferson Prize (2002). He teaches courses on German theater, Vienna's cultural history, and business German.
Administrative service includes twelve years as department chair and elected positions with the American Association of Teachers of German. Höyng secured funding for Emory's Vienna summer program through the Max Kade Foundation and established student scholarships.
