Professor Peter Heslin is a Professor of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University and Co-Director of Digital Humanities at the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS). His research integrates classical Latin poetry, Roman material culture, and digital humanities, with a focus on applying machine learning and Bayesian methods to literary history. He developed Diogenes, a widely used tool for analyzing Greek and Latin texts. Notable works include The Transvestite Achilles (2005), The Museum of Augustus (2015), and Propertius, Greek Myth, and Virgil (2018).
Professor Heslin’s research interests span classical poetry’s reception, Roman wall painting, and computational approaches to ancient texts. He has held prestigious fellowships including the Class of 1932 Visiting Fellowship at Princeton and the Getty Scholar award. His work bridges traditional Classics with cutting-edge digital tools, aiming to make ancient languages accessible via open-source software.
His articles explore topics like Virgil’s Epicureanism, Thetis’ cultural power, and the Augustan calendar. He also supervises PhD students in digital humanities and Augustan poetry. His Diogenes project exemplifies his commitment to democratizing access to ancient texts through technology.
