Peter Garrard

Professor Peter Garrard serves as Professor of Neurology at City St George's, University of London (formed from the August 2024 merger of City University London and St George's University of London), where he is affiliated with the Neuroscience & Cell Biology Research Institute and School of Health and Medical Sciences. He also holds positions as Honorary Consultant Neurologist at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Kings Oak Hospital, Enfield.

His research focuses on early language changes in neurodegenerative dementias using computational neurolinguistic approaches and corpus linguistics. Professor Garrard has conducted internationally recognized retrospective analyses of historical figures including King George III, Iris Murdoch, Harold Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, and Tony Blair. His work combines neuroimaging with language analysis to detect presymptomatic dementia markers.

He has secured major research funding from the Medical Research Council, European Commission, Leverhulme Trust, and Alzheimer's Society, including a £1.14 million MRC grant for developing the Mini Linguistic State Examination for Primary Progressive Aphasia and a Leverhulme Trust project analyzing King George III's correspondence.

Professor Garrard serves as Associate Editor for Cortex and the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, and is a trustee of the Daedalus Trust and Neuroscience Research Foundation. He has established a specialist service for atypical dementia syndromes at St George's and maintains extensive collaborations with researchers across the UK and internationally, including institutions in Manchester, Oxford, Southampton, Birmingham, and the United States.
