Dr. Peter Damrau is a Lecturer in the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication at Birkbeck, University of London. He holds an MA in German and Sociology (Universität Oldenburg, 1998) and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of London (2003). His research focuses on the reception of English literature in Germany, particularly examining 18th-century authors like Mary Astell, Eliza Haywood, and Elizabeth Singer Rowe, as well as feminist contributions to German literary history. He has taught German language, literature, and cultural studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, alongside business German and film studies.
Dr. Damrau’s administrative roles include Chair of the Languages Committee, Language Coordinator for German modules, and Program Director for BA Language and/with Management. He has coordinated study abroad programs for Spain, Germany, and Italy and led academic misconduct panels. His teaching modules span topics like 'Interrogating the Self,' 'Culture and Crisis,' and 'Wirtschaftsdeutsch.'
His research has earned the Max Kade Award (2009) for best article in German Quarterly. He supervised Dr. Andrew Nash’s doctoral thesis on Friedrich Gundolf’s literary critiques. Dr. Damrau also engages in knowledge transfer, designing language courses for institutions like the Royal Opera House and international companies such as Ricoh Europe.
