Susanne Vees-Gulani is Associate Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Case Western Reserve University, where she joined in 2006. She serves as Co-Director of the Max Kade Center for German Studies and previously held associate director roles at the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and World Literature program.
Her educational background:
- Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Dr. Vees-Gulani's research centers on 20th-21st century German culture, history, and literature, with a focus on war representations, trauma and memory studies, architecture, identity, postwar reconstruction, and far-right politics. She examines how aerial bombing and urban destruction shape German memory and identity through literary and visual analysis.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent engagement with German war memory, particularly Dresden and Berlin's destruction, using literature, photography, and urban studies. She explores contemporary far-right movements and generational shifts in postwar German society, connecting historical trauma to current political challenges.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship
- Baker-Nord Center Fellowship
- Freedman Fellowship
Her research is supported by grants from the Max Kade Foundation, Ohio Council for the Humanities, and CWRU's Expanding Horizons program. While specific student advisees aren't listed, her professorship and Max Kade Center leadership involve mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in German studies through courses like 'War and Memory' and 'Generational Shifts in German Culture.'
As Co-Director of the Max Kade Center for German Studies, she leads initiatives advancing German language, culture, and academic exchange through interdisciplinary events, lectures, and international collaborations that bridge historical analysis with contemporary German society.
