Prof. Dr. Peter Bruns is a Professor of Church History with a focus on Patrology at Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg. He has served as Director (2009-2023) and currently as Deputy Director of the Research Center for the Christian Orient at Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. His academic background includes theology studies in Bochum, Bonn, and Jerusalem, culminating in a doctorate on Aphrahat the Persian Sage (1990) and habilitation on Theodore of Mopsuestia (1994).
Bruns' research spans:
- Syriac Christianity and patristic literature
- Eastern Christian traditions under Islamic rule
- Interfaith dialogue with Islam
- Martyrology in late antiquity
- Christological developments in Ethiopian and Armenian churches
His recent publications (2022-2024) focus on Syriac martyrologies, Ethiopian Christology, and medieval theological controversies. He has edited several volumes including 'Dying & Killing for God? Martyrdom in Late Antiquity' (2022).
Bruns organizes the upcoming Symposium Syriacum Bambergense (March 2025) and maintains editorial involvement with lexicons of early Christian literature.
