Peter Breslin is a Raymond M. Turner Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Arizona, based at Tumamoc Hill. He conducts research on saguaro cacti using long-term ecological data collected since 1964. Prior to his academic career, he spent 30 years as a secondary school teacher.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Environmental Life Sciences, Arizona State University, 2020
Dr. Breslin's research interests center on plant ecology and evolution, with a focus on cacti. His doctoral work examined the Mammilloid Clade, including species such as Cochemiea grahamii. Currently, he is analyzing decades of saguaro cactus data to model their population viability and future distribution under climate change scenarios.
At Tumamoc Hill, Breslin is part of a long-term ecological monitoring project that continues the legacy of researchers Rod Hastings and Ray Turner. He utilizes data from the National Park Service and collaborations in Mexico to extend his projections over the next 100-200 years.
