Peter Baas, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy at Drexel University College of Medicine and Director of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience. He holds a PhD from Michigan State University, followed by postdoctoral training at Temple University. His research focuses on neurodegeneration, dysfunction, and repair of the nervous system, particularly targeting microtubules as a common pathway across diseases like Alzheimer’s, Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), and Gulf War Illness.
His lab investigates mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders, HSP (via SPAST gene mutations), tauopathies (Alzheimer’s-related tau protein dysfunction), Gulf War Illness (toxicant-induced neurodegeneration), and spinal cord injury. Collaborations include the Gulf War Illness Consortium and the Marion Murray Spinal Cord Research Center.
Dr. Baas has received multiple awards, including the 2023 Award for Excellence in Basic Science Mentoring. His lab uses advanced models like human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and mouse models to develop therapies. Key publications highlight microtubule dynamics in disease, tau’s role in axonal stability, and Gulf War Illness mechanisms.
