Peter A. Lichtenberg is a Distinguished University Service Professor of Psychology and Gerontology at Wayne State University, where he has served since 1991. He previously directed the Institute of Gerontology (1999–2024) and founded the Wayne State University Lifespan Alliance. Dr. Lichtenberg holds advanced certifications in Rehabilitation Psychology and Clinical Geropsychology, with post-doctoral training in geriatric neuropsychology from the University of Virginia. His research focuses on financial decision-making, elder financial exploitation, and neurocognitive impairment in aging populations. He has authored over 220 peer-reviewed publications, seven books, and contributed to major initiatives like the WALLET study and the I-CONECT clinical trial addressing social isolation in older adults.
Dr. Lichtenberg’s work bridges clinical practice and policy, with over 200 expert witness evaluations on capacity and exploitation cases. He has secured significant grant funding and led national organizations such as the Gerontological Society of America. His awards include the Donald P. Kent and Robert W. Kleemeier Award Lectures (2022). He emphasizes community-engaged research, particularly with minority aging populations, and advocates for age-inclusive policies on university campuses.
Key contributions include developing assessment tools like the Financial Exploitation Vulnerability Scale and advancing interventions to protect older adults’ financial autonomy.
