Pertti Ala-aho is an Associate Professor (Tenure Track) and Academy Research Fellow at the University of Oulu, Faculty of Technology, within the Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering department. He leads the "Snow Hydrology and Modeling" research group, focusing on adapting to changing snow conditions in the North.
Education:
- D.Sc. (Technology)
- M.Sc. (Technology)
His research spans Snow Hydrology, Hydrological Modeling, and Isotope Hydrology with emphasis on Arctic regions and water resources engineering. Ala-aho develops isotope hydrology methods to "fingerprint" snowmelt water contributions to societal "blue water" and ecosystem "green water," while advancing digital monitoring technologies to enhance hydrological modeling frameworks for improved environmental decision-making.
Scientific Awards:
- Academy Research Fellow (Research Council of Finland)
Grants and Projects:
- Academy of Finland Research Fellow project (2022-2027): "Correcting a bias undermining the global importance of snowmelt"
- Tenure Track project funded by Maa- ja Vesitekniikan Tuki: "Digitalization and Hydrological modeling"
- Cryosphere Research Infrastructure
- Freshwater Competence Centre
He supervises theses and maintains active research collaborations at Oulanka and Pallas in northern Finland, with community engagement through ORCID, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, X, and LinkedIn.
His research group addresses critical challenges in northern hydrology through isotope tracing techniques and data-model integration, positioning snowmelt processes as central to understanding Arctic water cycle transformations under climate change.
