Pedram Gerami, MD is the IDP Foundation Professor of Skin Cancer Research and Professor of Dermatology (Dermatopathology), Pathology, and Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Skin Cancer Institute of Northwestern Medicine (SCIN-Med) and Director of the Melanoma Program and Melanoma Clinic.
Dr. Gerami earned his MD from Rosalind Franklin University/Finch/Chicago Medical School (2001), completed dermatology residency at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (2005), and dermatopathology fellowship at University of Chicago Hospitals (2006). Board certified in both Dermatology and Dermatopathology by the American Board of Dermatology.
His research centers on molecular diagnostics for melanoma and borderline melanocytic tumors, utilizing genomic characterization to improve diagnostic accuracy and early detection. He has developed standard-of-care assays including FISH for melanoma diagnosis, mRNA expression profiling for prognosis, and non-invasive tape-stripping diagnostics. His work integrates clinical, histologic, and molecular data to resolve diagnostically challenging cases like Spitz tumors and deep-penetrating nevi.
Recent publications demonstrate his focus on genomic classification of difficult melanocytic neoplasms, with emphasis on pediatric Spitz tumors, NF-mutated desmoplastic lesions, and deep-penetrating nevi/melanomas. His research consistently bridges molecular discoveries with clinical diagnostic applications.

Research initiatives focus on genomic characterization pipelines and early-detection technologies.
The Skin Cancer Institute under his leadership provides multidisciplinary care integrating clinical expertise, genomic analysis, and imaging technologies to detect melanoma at curable stages, particularly for high-risk patients with genetic syndromes or complex neoplasms.
