Prof. Pauline Westerman is a Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Law. She holds a Master's in Philosophy (1986) and a PhD in Law (1997, cum laude) from the University of Groningen, where her doctoral thesis on natural law theory earned the Praemium Erasmianum. She has held academic roles since 1992, including Assistant Professor (1992–2000), Associate Professor (2000–2001), and Full Professor since 2001. Active in international legal scholarship, she has served on editorial boards (e.g., Legisprudence), directed the Groningen Graduate School of Law (since 2013), and contributed to institutions like the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (member since 2010).
Her research focuses on legal theory, international law, and European legal integration. Key themes include customary international law interpretation, legal evolution through deontic units, and the European legal order's coherence. Her work bridges normative philosophy and practical legal frameworks, addressing topics like legal pluralism and procedural legitimacy.
Westerman has authored/co-edited books such as Conceptual (Re)constructions of International Law (2022) and Customary International Law and Its Interpretation (2024). She has also engaged in public discourse on legal trust and procedural justice. Her roles include leadership in academic governance and membership in prestigious institutions like the IVR Executive Committee and the Social Sciences Council of the Royal Dutch Academy.
