Dr. Paula Murphy is an Assistant Professor in the School of English at Dublin City University (DCU). Her roles include teaching and research in literary theory, postmodernism, posthumanism, Irish literature post-1990, film, and technology. She currently researches AI representations in film and has published extensively on topics such as AI creativity, film technology, and Irish cultural narratives. Her work bridges literature, cinema, and digital humanities, exploring themes like authorship, embodiment, and societal impact of technology.
Research Interests: Her interdisciplinary focus spans posthumanist new materialism, the intersection of technology and art, and Irish cultural production. She has explored AI in literature and film, including studies on Spike Jonze’s Her and the first AI novel 1 the Road.
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in journals like Film International, Short Film Studies, and Kritikos. She authored AI in the Movies (2024) and edited The Shattered Mirror: Irish Literature and Film 1990-2005.
Teaching: Coordinates modules on Modernism, Postmodernism, and Irish Writing. Engages students in analyzing literature and film through critical theory frameworks.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with DCU’s Irish Centre for Poetry Studies and participates in interdisciplinary projects on digital creativity.
