Prof. Gary Murphy is a Full Professor of Politics at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University (DCU), where he has worked since 1995 and was Head of the School from 2012 to 2018. Elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2024, he is a leading authority on Irish politics and lobbying regulation.
He studied at University College Cork (BA 1990, MA 1992) and earned his doctorate at DCU in 1996 under Prof. Eunan O'Halpin. His academic leadership roles include being DCU's first Dean of Graduate Studies (2007–2011), President of the Political Studies Association of Ireland (2009–2012), and Visiting Fulbright Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (2011–2012).
Prof. Murphy's research focuses on Irish Politics and Lobbying Regulation, with significant contributions to electoral competition and political corruption studies. His acclaimed 2021 biography Haughey was widely praised for its depth and insight into Ireland's political history.
His recent publications analyze legislative dynamics, interest group influence, and transparency frameworks in global contexts. Articles like Parliamentary Politics and the Experience of Dáil Éireann during the Irish Civil War (2024) and Regulating Lobbying: A Global Comparison (2019) reflect his expertise in historical and comparative policy analysis.

Prof. Murphy has advised the Irish Government Reform Unit on the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015 and served on the Local Electoral Area Boundary Committee (2012). He is a regular political analyst on RTE and writes a weekly column for the Irish edition of the Sunday Times.
